Dalai Lama meets man who escorted him to India 58 yrs back

Guwahati: Tibetan otherworldly pioneer the Dalai Lama on Sunday had an enthusiastic gathering with one of the five Assam Rifles protects who escorted him to India amid his escape from Tibet in March 1959.

"Much obliged to you exceptionally much.... I am extremely glad to meet such an old individual from the Assam Rifles who monitored and escorted me to India 58 years prior," an obviously enthusiastic Dalai Lama said on the event.

"Taking a gander at your face, I now acknowledge I should be extremely old as well," he said to Das jokingly.

Wearing his Assam Rifles uniform, 76-year-old Das, later revealed to PTI that he escorted the Dalai Lama as his equipped watch in 1959, two years subsequent to joining the drive in 1957.

Around then, he was posted at Lungla close to the China fringe subsequent to finishing his preparation at Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, he said.

"Watchmen of Assam Rifles Platoon no. 9 had brought the Dalai Lama from Zuthangbo and gave him over to five of us at Shakti. We conveyed him to Lungla from where he was escorted on his ahead adventure to Tawang by another gathering of watchmen," the resigned jawan said.

Asked whether he had any communication with the Dalai Lama amid that trip, Das said that they were not permitted to talk or associate with him. "Our obligation was just to watch and escort him amid a piece of his excursion."
